When we love and obey the truth of God’s word (Ps 33:4), especially within the family of God (1 Pet 1:22), then we are also showing our love for Jesus. Because He is “the way, the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6)! Every local church that stands for the truth will always be challenged in some way. That is why we “should earnestly contend for the faith” (Jude 1:3). We are responsible to know and live the truth, by “holding faith, and a good conscience” (1 Tim 1:19). John was dealing with a local congregation, wherein some lived in truth while others did not! Gaius was practicing the truth (v. 3), and it brought joy in John’s heart (v. 4)!
Gaius was also encouraging all believers to show hospitality, by doing “faithfully whatsoever they to the brethren, and to strangers” (v. 5). In particular, he was helping those who traveled while preaching God’s word (v. 6). It is a great privilege to get involved in God’s program of missions as “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Cor 5:20). Our Lord Jesus commanded us to be “the salt of the earth” (Mt 5:13), and “the light of the world” (Mt 5:14). It is with great joy to know Christ as our Lord and Savior (1 Pet 1:8). But we also need to make His name known to others, even “unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). John and Gaius were unified in the same mind (Php 2:2), and purpose as “fellowhelpers to the truth” (v. 8).
This unity caused them to serve the Lord faithfully (2 Cor 8:19). Christians, we need to have “the unity of the faith” (Eph 4:13), by making sure that we filter out the truth and recognize the difference between “good and evil” (Heb 5:14). True love will always manifest itself in our faithfulness to serve the Lord “in truth with all our heart” (1 Sam 12:24). Our goal is to reach the lost with the gospel! God bless you!
