Jerusalem, in her backslidden condition, was found “filthy and polluted.” God sent the prophet Zephaniah to deliver His warnings, but “she obeyed not the voice” (v. 2a)! The Lord knows that her princes, her judges, her prophets, and her priests (v. 3-4), know better than to pollute themselves and the sanctuary. He already brought judgment upon them by cutting off the nations around them and making “their streets waste” (v. 6). But they still continued to corrupt themselves because “the unjust knoweth no shame” (v. 5)! A similar scene will happen during the tribulation period; when the fourth vial is poured “upon the sun…to scorch men with fire” (Rev 16:8).
Instead of humbling themselves, they blasphemed God, “and repented not of their deeds” (Rev 16:11). Environmentalists today are crying out about pollution and climate change, while politicians exaggerate their narratives on global warming. But what about the moral pollution in our society, the degradation of bible-based family values, and all the government corruption that are being uncovered? Many are blinded by “the god of this world” (2 Cor 4:4)! We are seeing a steady decline of moral character as they sink deeper into iniquity (2 Tim 3:13), through Satan’s lies and deception (2 Cor 11:14). Sadly, many professing believers are not even concerned about obeying God’s words (Mt 7:21). Because “there is no fear of God before their eyes” (Rom 3:18)! Zephaniah warned the people, but they “received not correction” (v. 2b).
Therefore, God will hide His eyes from them and will not hear their prayers (Isa 1:15). God is always faithful; His desire is to have fellowship with us (1 Cor 1:9). We may show a phony face to others (Mt 7:5), but God knows exactly what’s in our hearts (Mt 15:18). Our lip service can’t fool Him (Isa 29:13)! Is God trying to get your attention by shaking you up? Then you better start humbling yourself and line up to God’s word with “fear and trembling” (Php 2:12). His next move might be your last!God bless you!
