Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, used to be an “exceeding great city” (Jon 3:3). They repented after the prophet Jonah preached to them (Jon 3:5). But about 100 years later, they abandoned the ways of God. They were called “the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery” (v. 1). They also committed a multitude of whoredoms, witchcrafts and idolatry (v. 4). Therefore, God told them that He was “against thee” (Nah 2:13), for the second time. Nahum prophesies of God’s impending judgment (v. 7). Their brutality (v. 10), will lead to its ruin and desolation.
Nineveh finally fell in 612 BC and was utterly destroyed. The Assyrian empire came to an end. Today, the province of Ninawa with its capital city of Mosul, is located in northern Iraq. God will never leave the wicked “unpunished” (Prov 11:21). Although His judgment was rendered to the entire nation, He will also “render to every man according to his deeds” (Rom 2:6), “and according to the fruit of his doings.” (Jer 17:10). Everyone of us will be judged according to what we have done, “with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecc 12:14). God will judge fairly according to each person’s life. As God’s children, “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Cor 5:10).
But lost sinners will face the great white throne judgment, where death and hell will be cast into the lake of fire, which “is the second death” (Rev 20:14)! People tend to stereotype and judge others based on their own biased opinions (Prov 18:2). But God judges people based on what He knows about their hearts, because He “knoweth all things” (1 Jn 3:20), and He sees everyone (Heb 4:13). If we have not shown forgiveness to others, then God will not forgive us also (Mt 18:35). His judgments are always justified! God bless you!
