As God’s children, whatsoever we “do in word or deed,” we ought to “do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31). Because we “serve the Lord Christ” (v. 24), and we should serve Him both continually and faithfully! As “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Cor 5:20), we are representing Him in this world through all the words that we speak and the deeds that we do. It is with great honor and privilege to serve Him (Jn 12:26). And we have His authority behind everything that we do or say in His name (Mt 5:16). Therefore, we must be thankful to be God’s servants (1 Thes 5:18), wherever He places us! Sadly, many people today are always complaining about almost anything.
But when it comes to serving the Lord, our goal is not to improve our status but to love and serve Him with all our heart and with all our soul (Deut 11:13). Our passage expands on these principles as they concern our roles and duties within the family. It would be much easier for wives to submit to their own husbands (v. 18), if they are already serving the Lord. When a husband has a servant heart, he would surely love his wife (v. 19), “even as Christ also loved the church” (Eph 5:25). He would also become a better father (v. 21).
Children will be obedient to their “parents in all things” (v. 20), when they are God’s servants. If they please God, they would also obey their “parents in the Lord” (Eph 6:1). When bible-believing employees are serving the Lord (v. 22), they would be the best employees in any workplace. Joseph was a faithful servant of Potiphar (Gen 39:2), because he was also a faithful servant of God! We must put ourselves wholeheartedly into serving “the Lord with gladness” (Ps 100:2). There will be promised rewards later (2 Cor 5:10), for all our sacrificial services today! God bless you!
