When Micah prophesied during the “days of Jotham” (Mic 1:1), nobody listened to him. But he never gave up and continued to preach during the reign of Hezekiah (2 Ki 18:1). Thus, the people finally responded and repented (Jer 26:18)! He told them that “this is not your rest” (v. 10). Jerusalem became polluted with sin and wickedness. Instead of a place of safety, it became the leading cause of their destruction (Jer 32:30). Therefore, God led Israel and Judah into captivity under Assyria (2 Ki 17:23), and Babylon (Jer 32:36). This was necessary so they would know the true and living God Who can restore them. Because the Lord Himself is the great bond “breaker!”
When Micah spoke about “the breaker,” he was also referring to the prophecy concerning the coming Messiah (Mic 5:2). Not only would the Jews be brought out of bondage, but Jesus “the Deliverer” (Rom 11:26), would also break open the barriers and pave the Only way for their salvation (Jn 14:6). He “was made in the likeness of men” (Php 2:7), to break us free from the bondage of sin (Gal 5:1). Jesus, the truth, “shall make you free” (Jn 8:32)! Through God’s great mercy and His lovingkindness (Isa 63:7), the Jews recognized their Divine deliverer from Babylon; that “the breaker” is the Messiah.
Because He had set them free from prison (Isa 49:9), and He became the “leader and commander to the people” (Isa 55:4). Our Lord Jesus suffered and died on the cross (1 Pet 2:24), for the flock that He sought to deliver (Jn 10:11). Israel will one day call upon Him and seek Him (Jer 29:13); as their Redeemer (Hos 1:11), and as their Head. Jesus has already broken the penalty of sin (Rom 7:24), and He shall continue to help us break through the power of canceled sin in this present world! God bless you!
