The tribes of Reuben and Gad (v. 1), tried to convince Moses to let them stay outside of Canaan and inherit the lands of Jezer and Gilead because they had owned a great multitude of cattle (v. 4). Moses agreed on the condition that they must first help their brethren to fight against the enemies in Canaan until they have driven them out (v. 21). However, these two tribes just want to “sit” and refuse to fight against the enemies.
Sadly, there are many professing believers today who are merely content in being pew warmers or just standing on the sidelines (Oba 1:11), while allowing other dedicated workers to faithfully help grow the church (1 Cor 4:2). As you grow in the Lord spiritually (2 Pet 3:18), by studying His word (2 Tim 2:15), and spending time with Him in prayers (1 Thes 5:17), you will be convicted to have a strong desire to serve the Lord (Ps 100:2), and be a team player. With your God-given talent and capacity, you must then “seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church” (1 Cor 14:12)! These two tribes didn’t want anymore fighting. They were content in simply raising their cattle (v. 4).
Christians, we must wake up to the reality (Rom 13:11), that Satan and his minions have not let up in their fight against us and the gospel (1 Pet 5:8). Don’t be complacent to sit there, but be willing to “earnestly contend for the faith” (Jude 1:3)! We must all “stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel” (Php 1:27). Don’t be scared to share the gospel (Prov 11:30). Don’t be afraid to spend time in prayer and fasting (Mk 9:29). There is a spiritual battle that is raging (Eph 6:12). Watch, and “stand fast in the faith” (1 Cor 16:13), for the cause of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! God bless you!
