Jesus knows all about the church at Pergamos (v. 12), which is the capital city of Asia Minor. As God’s children, we need to be reminded that He also knows all about us personally and intimately (Jer 1:5). Jesus knows that this church operated right in the middle of a city where “Satan's seat is,” or the place where his headquarters is located here on earth! Satan and his minions are not yet in hell! He is “the prince of the power of the air” (Eph 2:2), and he knows that one day he will be “cast into the lake of fire” (Rev 20:10). That everlasting fire was “prepared for the devil and his angels” (Mt 25:41). Meanwhile, he is very active in our world today as he “walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet 5:8).
Jesus knows that this church was living in a very wicked area and He has some words of encouragement for them. I’m glad that our Lord Jesus also knows all about our troubles and trials (Job 23:10). He knows when we are having difficulties with some family issues. He knows if we are facing some persecutions in our work place, at school, or even at church (Rom 8:35). He knows the pressures and challenges that are being pressed upon every faithful child of God in our society (Gal 6:12). Jesus “is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things” (1 Jn 3:20); “His understanding is infinite” (Ps 147:5).
Therefore, He invites us to cast all our worries, burdens, and hurts upon Him (Mt 11:28). Because He cares for us (1 Pet 5:7), and He stands ready always “that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb 4:16)! Just like the church at Pergamos, we must take a stand for what is godly (Prov 14:34), and be willing to speak up against evil in our society (Mt 10:32); whatever the cost! God bless you!
