Our verse points back to the previous verses to explain the reason why God has given our Lord Jesus His place of exaltation and glory. Although He was “equal with God” (v. 6), and is absolutely God (Jn 1:1), He took upon Himself “the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” (v. 7). His miraculous virgin birth happened when He was born in Bethlehem (Mt 1:21). The Creator came to earth and became dependent upon His creation. He did not come as a king or a ruler, but as a servant! He “came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mk 10:45).
This is the primary reason why God exalted Him, because He willingly humbled Himself to commend or demonstrate “His love toward us” (Rom 5:8), that even though we were sinners, He willingly died to pay the penalty for our sins (1 Pet 1:18). That “whosoever believeth in Him shall receive remission of sins” (Acts 10:43), when you repent and trust Him as your Lord and Savior by faith (Acts 20:21). He willingly “laid down His life for us” (1 Jn 3:16), on Calvary’s cross – the Innocent for the guilty, so that lost sinners might be saved (Jn 10:17)!
Because He submitted and humbly obeyed the Father’s will (Lk 22:42), “even the death of the cross” (v. 8); the Father has exalted His “name which is above every name.” His death was so cruel and horrible when “He was wounded for our transgressions” (Isa 53:5). He was not hanged or poisoned; His blood was shed on the cross to cleanse “us from all sin” (1 Jn 1:7). He did it because of His great love for us (Jn 3:16). There “is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Christians, we all need to join forces with the Father and lift up the name of Jesus! God bless you!
