Walking Together In Agreement With God

Melito Barrera • January 28, 2025

Amos 3:3 says, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

The prophet Amos was surely in agreement with God for him to prophesy the coming destruction of the nation Israel (Amos 6:1). Amos was telling the people to return to God and be also in agreement with Him. If you are saved, then you agreed with God that you are a sinner (Rom 3:23), and that sin has a penalty (Rom 6:23), in the lake of fire, which “is the second death” (Rev 20:14). Then you agreed that Jesus is the Only Person Who can save you from that terrible place (Acts 4:12). You made the greatest decision by accepting Jesus, the free gift of God’s grace “through faith” (Eph 2:8), as you Lord and Saviour (Rom 10:9)! Your relationship with Jesus was “sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Eph 1:13). You will never lose your salvation because He promised to “never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Heb 13:5). And “He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Php 1:6).

Just as our relationship with Jesus is forever sealed, agreeing with God and His word is also the key to a lifelong relationship in marriage. Because what God had “joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mt 19:6). Since they are “one flesh” (Mk 10:8), they are committed to one another, and the only way they can be separated is through death (Rom 7:2)!

When both husband and wife are saved and in agreement with God’s word (Prov 6:23), there will be harmony in their marriage if they would both submit to their corresponding roles and responsibilities (Eph 5:21); with the husband being a loving leader (Eph 5:25), and the wife as a submissive helpmeet (Eph 5:22)! If you are single and saved, you will be in disagreement with God’s word if you plan on marrying someone who is not saved. Because you will be “unequally yoked together” (2 Cor 6:14). But if you both agree with God, then the two of you shall walk together for the rest of your lives! God bless you!
