Before Jesus was crucified, He had a personal conversation with the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. The Lord used this opportunity to reveal His true identity that He “bear witness unto the truth” (v. 37). Pilate was obviously not aware of the truth that our Savior was talking about. Otherwise, he would not have asked Him, “What is truth?” Pilate’s opinion of the truth may have been clouded by the “philosophy and vain deceit” (Col 2:8), of their day. He might have believed that truth can neither be known nor attained. Sadly, many people today are in that same position – almost no one believes in absolute truth anymore.
Some even think that truth is relative. If that is the case, then they would have nothing to believe in! But if they would only trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior by faith (Eph 2:8), then they “shall know the truth, and the truth shall make them free” (Jn 8:32). The True and “living God” (Jer 10:10), is unchanging (Mal 3:6). Jesus Himself is “the truth” (Jn 14:6)! He is “the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Heb 13:8). To believe in absolute truth, for example, we must believe that water is wet, grass is green, and the law of conservation of energy remains constant. Truth is something that never changes!
It can be known, learned, and taught to others. As bible-believing Christians, the task becomes easier because of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives (1 Cor 6:19); Who shall guide us “into all truth” (Jn 16:13). But the lost people are blinded by “the god of this world” (2 Cor 4:4). Thereby rejecting the truth and choosing the lies of Satan (Jn 8:44). Jesus believed in absolute truth that He came to this world (Jn 3:16). He lived, died, and “rose again” (1 Cor 15:4), to bear witness to that truth! God bless you!
