His Spirit And His Breath

Melito Barrera • April 1, 2025

Job 34:14 says, “If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;”

When “God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” (Gen 2:7), man became a living soul. The Spirit of God had made us, and “the breath of the Almighty” (Job 33:4), has given us life. We have a “spirit and soul and body” (1 Thes 5:23). We breathe in and out to move air into our lungs. God gave us both breath “and spirit” (Isa 42:5). If He takes away our spirit (Jms 2:26), and our breath (Ps 104:29), then we perish and “turn again unto dust” (v. 15). Humans and animals “have all one breath” (Ecc 3:19). But animals don’t have souls, so their spirits go downward to the earth when they die (Ecc 3:21), while man’s spirit “shall return unto God who gave it” (Ecc 12:7).

God sustains man’s spirit and breath, which are both essential for life. Evolutionists who deny God (Ps 14:1), also believe in the absolute nonsense that everything came from nothing, and the “big bang” produced incredible order – that’s a big lie (Jn 8:44)! Folks, without God, there will be no life (Gen 1:26)! Our spirit reveals much about who we are (Prov 20:27). It must be ruled or controlled (Prov 16:32). Otherwise, it will control us whenever we are stirred up, troubled, or in anguish (Ps 77:3). We cannot rely on prescription drugs to control our spirit, because we are responsible for our behavior (Eze 18:20).

Therefore, we must rule it! Our God-given spirit and breath provide us with natural life. But it was tainted by Adam’s sin (Rom 5:12), which caused our spirit to be “dead in trespasses and sins” (Eph 2:1). Without the quickening power of the Holy Spirit (Eph 2:5), upon salvation through Jesus Christ alone (Acts 4:12), the soul of a lost person will go straight to hell (Lk 16:23)! However, the Spirit of God gives us eternal life and the assurance “that we are the children of God” (Rom 8:16)! God bless you!
