When The Elements Shall Melt

Melito Barrera • February 28, 2025

2 Peter 3:10 says, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

When our Lord Jesus comes again, He “will come as a thief in the night,” because no one knows the day or the hour of His return (Mt 24:36). Sin and corruption have affected not just the earth but also the heavens and “the whole creation” (Rom 8:22). Therefore, God will create “a new heaven and a new earth” (Rev 21:1), after the “heavens shall pass away with a great noise.” In the mean-time, everything “are kept in store” (v. 7), and are held together “by the word of His power” (Heb 1:3). When the time comes, “the elements shall melt with fervent heat,” and everything we see (2 Cor 4:18), shall be destroyed by God’s supernatural power!

The air that we breathe contains gases that could potentially be explosive that even the slightest molecular change could result in the destruction of our planet. For example, oxygen in the air is required for combustion. Nitrogen is a component that is part of dynamite. Even water can become explosive when its molecules of hydrogen and oxygen are separated. The radioactive elements in the actinoid series, such as Uranium, have the power to level cities and vaporize humans.

The earth itself has an inner core with a temperature that is about the same as the surface of the sun. God will simply speak the word, and all the elements that He created, including the earth’s core, can be altered to burn up everything! There will not be any dust to even settle after everything is dissolved. God will create “new heavens and a new earth” (v. 13), just like the “potter” (Jer 18:4), and the “refiner's fire” (Mal 3:2). As we look for His coming (2 Tim 4:8), let us set our “affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (Col 3:2)! God bless you all!
