The beautiful passages in this book detail the romantic relationship between the husband and his beloved wife (v. 1). It is a wonderful picture of our Lord Jesus, Who “loved the church, and gave Himself for it” (Eph 5:25). The wife is a type of the church, who is the bride of Christ (Rev 19:7). The husband was outside the door knocking and trying to get his beloved to let him inside (v. 2). When Jesus addressed the Laodicean church, He was also standing outside the door and knocking (Rev 3:20); desiring to get admission and have fellowship!
Jesus never gives up in reaching out to enter the lives of those He loves (Ps 18:16). He came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk 19:10). I’m so glad that He never gave up on me! When He found me and saved me by His grace (Eph 2:5), He “set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings” (Ps 40:2). While the husband knocks, his wife asked, “I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on?” She was already settled on her bed and no longer wants to make any efforts to get up and open the door.
Sadly, there are so many professing believers today who are in a state of apathy (Prov 13:4). They seem to be satisfied where they are and don’t have any motivation to go farther with the Lord by having their lives “rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith” (Col 2:7). Thus, resulting in lukewarmness (Rev 3:16), and a lack of spiritual growth (2 Pet 3:18). For the most part, it is just plain laziness (Prov 26:14)! True believers don’t have to get saved again (Jn 10:28) – Jesus wants those who had been cold and complacent (Amos 6:1), to repent and be revived (Ps 85:6); by opening the door and fellowshipping with Him! God bless you!
