To “study” means an effort of acquiring knowledge through reading, hearing, or observation. As God’s children (Gal 3:26), we are all commanded to study His word! Before being saved, we struggled to understand the truth, “because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor 2:14). But after trusting Jesus as our Lord and Savior by faith (Rom 5:1), we now have the Spirit’s guidance “into all truth” (Jn 16:13). We learn how to communicate directly to Him in prayers (Jer 33:3), and how He communicates to us through His word (2 Tim 3:16). The purpose of studying His word is to show ourselves “approved” unto Him; by seeking His approval rather than men (Gal 1:10). There are so many “false teachers” (2 Pet 2:1), today who are spreading “heresies” (1 Cor 11:19), and wrong doctrine (2 Tim 4:3).
Sadly, most people who gain easy access to their teachings through the Internet and social media, would simply take their word and never study it from God’s word. We live in an age of religious convenience, where people are so used to just watching everything online, even church (Heb 10:25). They trust their own philosophy (Php 2:3), but they “will not seek after God” (Ps 10:4). Remember, the flesh does not like “much study” (Ecc 12:12), because it “lusteth against the Spirit” (Gal 5:17). Therefore, it is important to separate from the “the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 Jn 2:16).
This spiritual battle can be won by our willingness to fight the enemy (Jms 4:7), and by desiring to glorify God (Jn 3:30). Christians, “now it is high time to awake” (Rom 13:11), and “give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine” (1 Tim 4:13). We must be like the Bereans who “received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11). We must study to show ourselves approved! God bless you!
