God requires His children to be in constant communication with Him through prayers. But it does not mean that we should be on our knees 24/7 and praying non-stop! In fact, our Lord Jesus even took some time to cease from praying (Lk 11:1). Our passage reminds us that we are to be in a conscious communion with the Lord and by praising Him “continually” (Ps 71:14). We must always be in a posture of spiritual alertness and ready to pray because our “flesh is weak” (Mt 26:41). When we call upon God (Jer 33:3), it’s like using our cell phones. But we should never end the call or place Him on hold. He wants us to be in contact with Him for the rest of our waking hours.
We must start our day in prayer and stay in touch with Him all day! Although the Bible does not specifically tell us how many times we ought to pray each day, we must persevere by “continuing instant in prayer” (Rom 12:12). Just like David, who praised the Lord seven times a day (Ps 119:164), and Daniel, who prayed three times a day (Dan 6:10). We must have the habit of “praying always” (Col 1:3). When we feel hungry, we feed our bodies with food regularly; about three times a day and maybe some snacks in between. If only we could tune our prayer lives in harmony with the frequency of our feeding times, then we would surely experience some radical changes in our spiritual walk (Gal 5:16).
Remember, we have a relentless enemy (1 Pet 5:8), who never ceases to provoke us in our spiritual battlefields (Eph 6:12). We thank God that He already provided us with the greatest offensive weapon called prayer (Eph 6:18)! And in the heat of the battle, our Commander in Chief is able to communicate His orders so we can carry them out immediately. This is the greatest advantage that we have against the devil. When we pray without ceasing, it unleashes the power of God in our lives! God bless you!
